Leicester Academy was founded on March 23, 1784, when the Act of Incorporation for Leicester Academy was passed by the Massachusetts General Court as a private, state chartered institution. The Academy opened on June 7, 1784, on land donated by Jewish merchant Aaron Lopez in Leicester, Massachusetts. One of the most significant benefactors and founders was Moses Gill (January 18, 1733 - May 20, 1800), an American merchant and politician who served as the acting governor of Massachusetts from 1799 to 1800, when he died in office, the only acting governor to do so.
