It is a first edition published in 1844 by Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, London. It has an illustrated frontispiece. It covers 31 tales of interactions with Native American peoples including Pocahontas and Captain Smith, Legend of the Choctaws, To-ta-pia and Hock-tan-lub-bee, Silouee and Indian Superstition, The Capture of Mrs Duston, the Last of the Pequots, William Penn's bargain, and the Pilgrim Fathers. It not only highlights the superior talents, courage or vices of the native American people but also shows the sufferings, perseverance and ultimate success of the Anglo-American colonists, from the landing of the Pilgrim Fathers in 1620 to the time of the Declaration of Independence. Brown blind stamped hardboards with image of 3 natives to the middle of the front and rear boards. Gilt title lettering to the spine. Black mark to the top left corner of the front board and cloth split to front hinge. The front free endpaper is missing so the first page is the Half Title. Spine darkened and chipped to head and tail. Corners a bit bumped. Pages clean and firm. 362 pages, + 32 page publisher's catalogue dated December 1844 and also a two page New Works advertising sheet bound in. 18 x 11 cm.
