Description: 1861 Beautiful Leaved Plants EJ Lowe Esq, Plate #1 The author, Reverend Morris was, like many 19th-century Church of England clergymen was a naturalist historian in his spare time. Morris edited The Naturalist from 1856 to 1860 and wrote tracts and books on a large number of subjects, including evolution (which he did not support) and nature preservation. This print is from the 1st edition and was printed in 1861. The renowned Benjamin Fawcett, the greatest color printer of the 19th century was used to illustrate this volume. Fawcett pioneered a system of wood block engraving from multiple wood blocks that resulted in vivid finely colored works such as this marvelous book. This process was called chromoxylography (color wood engraving) These plates are 6"x10" on creamy paper and are quite nice.
