Description: A scarce Civil War era issue, the 1864 double eagle is a condition rarity among Type One $20 Libertys. Although more than 200,000 pieces were struck it seems many were exported and eventually melted leaving Mint State examples rare across all grade levels. The present offering boasts superior surface preservation and eye appeal with only five PCGS examples graded finer and only two pieces finer with CAC approval. Remarkably free of major bagmarks or blemishes, scattered marks define the grade and are confined chiefly to the obverse. Both sides are satiny and highly lustrous with an original blend of rich sunny golden tones. The devices are sharply rendered throughout and the eye appeal exceeds expectations for the assigned grade! Sure to please the advanced collector, there is no doubt this beauty will find its way into another fine numismatic cabinet! - Liberty Head $20
