On his previous expedition Bonvalot, with Prince Henry of Orleans had scaled the Pamir and crossed Altyn Tagh and Chang Thang to Chitral and thence into India, this being the first time Europeans had crossed the mountain range. On this subsequent journey, he set out from the frontiers of Siberia and emerged on the coast of the new French colony of Tonquin, in the process, traversing most of northern and eastern Tibet through the regions previously explored by Dalgleish, Carey and Prjevalsky. In addition, he explored many new parts of the country, to which his predecessors had not reached, came within a hair's breadth of getting from Kulja to Lhasa itself (but he, like W W Rockhill was denied entry) and eventually proceeded to Ta-tsien-lu and became the first European to traverse the heart of Asia from north to east..
