Book is in fine condition; Clement Waters (1834-1916) was well known as a writer and lecturer upon art. She made extensive tours in Europe, visited Palestine and Turkey in 1868, and traveled round the world in 1883 - 1884. Clement writes "The history of no city exceeds that of Constantinople in dramatic interest, and no other can boast of so commanding a position, or one so well suited to the splendid capital of a proud and powerful empire." Beginning with Constantinople and Constantine the Great 324 - 337, she presents various periods of the city's history through 1985 and provides chapters on the antiquities; shops and bazaar;, habits and customs of Turkish ladies; cemetaries and funeral customs; birth, circumcision and marriage ceremonies; superstitions, dervishes, ramadan, and fatalism; education and much more.
