He was also a historian, social reformer and novelist. Westward Ho! is based on the adventures of the Elizabethan corsair Amyas Preston. He is given the name Amyas Leigh for the purposes of the novel. It follows his sailings to the New World with Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh where they battle with the Spanish. The work of historical fiction celebrates England's victories over Spain in the Elizabethan era. A prominent theme is the common 16th century fear of Catholic domination, reflected by Kingsley's own dislike of Catholicism. With fifteen colour illustrations and a frontispiece. Pages bright and clean.
