He was President of Harvard University from 1909 to 1933. Lowell cut a large figure in American education and in public life as well. At Harvard University his years as president saw a remarkable expansion of the university in terms of the size of its physical infrastructure, its student body, and its endowment. His reform of undergraduate education established the system of the single discipline major that became the standard in American education.The book is tight, square and sharp-cornered with 519 pages. Free of markings and flaws inside and out, other than very minor scuffing to corners and the inscription from the author to the prior owner. "To Abbot Lawrence Lowell, great leader, great scholar, great gentlemen with the authors gratitude for the wisest and most freindly guidance - William Yandell Elliott" Nice color frontis with tissue guard and maps. Rare book and even more so inscribed by the author. Elliott taught at Harvard for over 40 years and was an adviser to several Presidents, including Roosevelt, and accompanying him to Yalta.
