Description: We are presenting for sale an original 1949-1952 UNITED STATES NAVAL PRESENTATION SWORD. During the occupation of Japan, at the end of World War 2, some of the Japanese sword makers turned to producing beautiful presentation swords of the officers of the occupying American forces. One of the most famous was Miyazima & Company. This sword, produced for a Lt. Thoreston, was produced by them. The sword is in beautiful condition. The blade looks brand new. The blade is highly engraved with the Lt. Thoreston's name, various scroll work and "USN". The handle looks like some sort of mother of pearl. The only wear on the entire blade and scabbard is a slight tarnishing to the bottom portion of the scabbard. The blade comes with the original cover cloth, the carrying case and the card of the sword manufacturer. It measures from tip to tip 34" and the blade itself measures 28" long and at its widest measures 3/4". It comes in its original leather case with handle. Question: I heard that from 1942 to 1954 USN officers did not carry swords. Answer: I assume you mean the US Navy issuing swords "to board enemy ships"? The US navy discontinued issuing cutlass battle swords in 1942 due to WW2 material limitations. This has nothing to do with dress or presentation swords. These were purchased by the officers themselves or as presentation gifts to fellow officers during WW2 and after. The carrying of formal dress swords as an article of "formal dress" ended in November 1949 by NavOrd Inst. 4500-1. During the Japanese occupation, (The occupation, code named Operation Blacklist, started in late 1945 and was ended by the San Francisco Peace Treaty, signed on September 8, 1951, and effectively ended the occupation in 1952), many military officers had special presentation or parade ground swords done in Japan. For the obvious reason - Japanese sword quality. Incidentally the ban on swords was officially over by early 1954, and informally by 1951. It only lasted a couple of years and even then officers still purchased swords for gift or personal use.
