This is a 5-coin proof set that was acquired by me many years ago and has been stored to protect the coins and the original U.S. Mint packaging. This is the year that Bill Haley and the Comets released "Rock Around the Clock;" the book "Lord of the Rings" was released; Roger Bannister became the first person to run the four-minute mile and a movie ticket was $.70. For a collector it is amazing to see the difference between how proof sets were packaged in the mid-Twentieth Century; small cardboard box, a small sheet of tissue paper and individual coins placed in cellophane pockets and stapled together; compared to today's multi-coin cardboard cutouts to hold the coins and then encased in clear plastic holders and placed into bright colored, printed boxes. In these early years the manufacturing of proof coins was similar to today's process. Each coin was struck by a process that left the fields mirrored more than coins for circulation and in some rare cases gave the coin's devices a cameo effect. Regarding this specific set, each coin has lots of luster and the fields are mirrored. The set contains three 90% silver & 10% copper coins, the Franklin Half Dollar, the Washington Quarter and the Roosevelt Dime. To be expected, the coins with silver content have some toning. The dime's obverse finish is toned and the quarter and half dollar have rim-toning on both obverse and reverse sides. The Jefferson Nickel's composition is 75% copper & 25% nickel and is as beautiful as the day it was minted. The Lincoln Cent is composed of 95% copper & 05% tin and zinc and has maintained much of its red color, particularly on the reverse. While the coins are the most important elements of this set, the mint packaging is original. All corners of the top and bottom of the box are joined and secure. The set pictured is the one being offered and it will be shipped in a mailer box to protect the fragile OGP. Thank you for looking.
