Greece In Italy-The ruins of the Temple of Neptune (left) and the basilica in Paestum, Italy. These are among the archeological treasures being uncovered in the long buried city. The city, settled by Greek colonists in the sixth century B.C., was named after Poseidon, Greek God of the Sea. Neptune is the Roman name of Poseidon. Flint weapons which have been found at Paestum indicate that an earlier city, perhaps going back 10,000 years, may be uncovered on the site. Excavations have turned up traces of the later history of the town. It was conquered by the Lucanians, an Italian mountain people, around 400 B.C. The Romans came in around 273 B.C. They renamed the place Paestum. They put up their own buildings. After several centuries of prosperity, the town was deserted.
