Description: 1959 Topps #500 Vic Wertz Boston Red Sox High-end NM B59#500A1 This is a High-end 1959 Vic Wertz card with nice corners, straight edges, and nicely centered. Nice centering Nice corners Clean back High number Tough card Clean ‘59 vintage Wertz is probably best remembered for hitting the long drive that drove Mays to deepest part of the polo grounds with his back turned to the infield snagging the ball that was destined to deliver runs in the ‘54 World Series for the Cleveland Indians and maybe victory, but instead resulted in seemingly taking the wind out of the Indians, who were swept in 4 by the Giants, but not for lack of Wertz’s powerful bat, batting .500 for the series with 2 doubles, a triple, and a home run, scoring twice and driving in 3 in the short 4 game series. Wertz was signed in ‘42 and played 17 years with 5 teams with a lifetime .277 average and a ton of RBIs, a feature of his prowess with the bat. He retired after the 1963 season. Beautiful card.
