This Proof Set envelope contains FIVE Gem Proof coins plus a special Mint Token from the Philadelphia Mint in the original US Mint issued, hermetically sealed, air tight, flat plastic (mylar) cell pack. As are all the flat pack coin sets, two protective cardboard inserts with a descriptive note are included in the envelope. The total mintage for this Uncirculated Mint Set was 3,028,244The United States Mint has created annual Proof Sets of coins exclusively for collectors since 1936. The program was introduced to give coin collectors the opportunity to acquire a complete set of coins issued and released by the US Mint for a given year. Unlike the standard sets, Proof Sets are exclusively for collectors and are considered to be the finest examples of U.S. coinage available. Proof coins are struck from specially selected and polished planchets (coin blanks). The dies used to strike these coins are specially prepared as well and highly polished. The planchets are hand fed into the striking press and special care is taken during the handling and packaging of the proof coins. Proof coins are struck twice to ensure an increased sharpness in detail.
