Javalinas. "There one goes! Look, see him?" It's a common cry heard at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge as a javalina, one of Texas' most picturesque-if-ugliest inhabitants scoots across the road. Visitors know all about the javalina (pronounced ha-va-lee-na) because they've stopped first at the visitor's headquarters and seen the displays there. What they usually don't know, w=as they scan the brush from their slow-moving automobiles, is that most javalinas are found up near the exit, where the picnic area is. Javalinas aren't the main draw of this south coastal refuge, however. The whooping cranes are. The giant birds arrive from Canada in mid-October and stay until mid-April. protected now, their numbers are steadily increasing after the population dropped to 15 in 1940.
