Description: Two cabinet card photographs (just over 4 ΒΌβ by 5 ΒΌβ) of tornado damage in Delavan, Illinois, dated 1897. The top photograph is identified in ink on the front as A tree in the Walnut Grove and on the back as A Tree in the Grove, Cyclone near Delavan, Illinois, July 30, 1897, and shows the splintered trunk of a tree nearly snapped in two. The bottom photograph has the same identification on the front and back, View in the Grove, and shows a pile of downed trees. Delavan is located in Tazewell County, close by Peoria, and was settled by some Rhode Island families early on. The two photographs are in good or better condition with only light wear and soiling. Note the light rubbing and bumping at the corners of the cards. The photographs exhibit only good tonal range (a bit light) but show good or better detail. A nice pair of early tornado damage images!
