Reviews: ***** Excellent Basic Lenten Cookbook!ByCKon March 15, 2013 This is a well-organized, simple and plainly typeset book of recipes well-suited for Eastern Orthodox fast periods. It contains a summary of the life of St. Euphrosynus and some admonitions on the importance of fasting. I wish the author(s) would have included a disclaimer that exceptions to the strict rules of fasting are made for children, pregnant women, the elderly and the sick. The recipes are organized by type of dish (breads, desserts, fish, main dishes, salads, sauces and marinades, shellfish and vegetables). I appreciate the recipes for the liturgical offerings of prophoron, artoklasia, and kolliva. The recipes contain easily obtained ingredients and simple instructions. I haven't tried most of the recipes yet, but they look very good and easy to follow. Quite a few of the recipes contain flour, bread crumbs, etc. so if you are gluten intolerant like I am, I would suggest looking for a gluten-free vegan cookbook to complement this one. There are also some recipes with ingredients I would recommend leaving out, such as monosodium glutamate. Nonetheless, the majority of the recipes look very healthful. A most helpful section of the book is the appendix containing an outline and guidelines for the various feasts and fasts of the Church with dates for both the old and new calendars where applicable. There is also a comprehensive index at the end of the book. The other really nice thing is that the binding lays flat for ease of use in the kitchen. I am so glad I purchased this book and highly recommend it for Orthodox Christians who wish to participate in the fasts and feasts of the liturgical year.---- ***** Vegetarian/Vegan has a long tradition - who knew?ByMark in Cincinnation February 20, 2014 What a great book. Yes it is very plain with no pictures and simple type. If you're really into cooking it's the actual recipes that are important anyway. I've been looking for traditional vegetarian and vegan recipes in the Western tradition and it's been difficult. Then I find this book with good simple recipes. Yes there are some modern Asian or Mexican but most are what I like to think of as simple European dishes. The spinach and rice recipe is great and is a traditional Greek recipe even though it does't say so. There are even vegan cookies and cakes! All this from 1972 and before vegetarian and vegan became so common. I recommend this book for beginning vegetarians and experienced ones too. ----------------------------------------- Shipping: Dear Buyers, PLEASE BE PATIENT for your packages to be shipped and to arrive!
