Description: This milk glass mustard jar, shaped like an eagle and dating to around 1876, is known among collectors as the "Old Abe" jar. It was produced for the Centennial Exhibition (International Exhibition of Arts, Manufactures, and Products of the Soil & Mine), held at Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, PA, from May 10 to November 10, 1876, to commemorate both the 100th anniversary of the United States and the end of the Civil War. The exhibition drew approximately 10 million visitors, about 20% of the U.S. population at the time. The jar's design features an eagle behind a shield with a ribbon that reads "E. PLURIBUS UNUM," and was one of three different figurals of a series, specifically created for and showcased at the exhibition to honor America's Centennial. It was made by the Central Supply Company of Wellsburg, W Va. The jar is highly sought after by collectors due to its rarity. As depicted in the photos, the glass jar has some cracks and discoloration but is still in fairly good condition for its age (almost 150 years). It is about 6.5 inches tall.
