Description: Clear bottles were not natural around the turn of the century. The glass required manganese to make it clear. Unknown to the makers at the time, the glass turns amethyst when exposed to the rays of the sun. With the advent of machine-made bottles around 1920, this chemical disappeared so the color is a sure sign of age and authenticity. Here we have a delightful sun colored example from the late 1890s. It contained either catsup, grape or other fruit juice. You will note the screw top which was not common back then because it was hard to fit as opposed to a cork. It would have had a zinc screw on lid that would hopefully fit what the glass maker tooled. The bottle stands 7 ½” high and just over 2” in diameter. The sun has been good to this one turning it a dark sun-colored amethyst. The top is clearly hand made with flaws. It has a maker’s mark on the bottom and a few nice bubbles. It is in dug condition so there is some haze inside and out but it’s very clean with no other damage.
