Description: Wonderful Swiss carving of the Lion of Lucerne wood panel dating to the late 1800's. In Lucerne, there is a sculpture carving in a mountain and known as the Saddest Stone in the World. It is of a regal beast dying from a spear wound which is marked by a shield bearing the mark of the French Monarchy. The sculpture commemorates the 700+ swiss guards that died in 1792 French Revolution guarding the French Monarchy. The original sculpture is 33 feet long and 20 feet high. This wooden panel measures 4" high and 4.75" long. It has a hanger on the top. The saying at the top is To The Loyalty and bravery of the Swiss. It has a wonderful patina with beautiful details.
