Art Farmer Benny Golson Jazztet Here and Now LP Japan Import Grachan Moncur III

Description: Art Farmer Benny Golson Jazztet Here and Now LP Japan Import Grachan Moncur III Harold Mabern Archival Sleeve Recorded 1962 at Nola Studios, New York CityOne there best Farmer & Golson and group in great form Here and Now is an album by the Jazztet, led by trumpeter Art Farmer and saxophonist Benny Golson. It features performances recorded in 1962 and was originally released on the Mercury label"Tonk" was the name of a card game played by its composer, Ray Bryant; it has a "bass-clef piano figure and a foreshortened bridge that takes the melody into a different key". Alternative takes that appeared later may have been made with the intention of releasing them as singles, or they may have been part of rehearsals of the tune. Farmer's "Rue Prevail" is a slow blues.  Mabern's "Richie's Dilemma" was a tribute to Richie Powell and has a Latin tinge.  Golson's "Whisper Not" dates from 1956.  The following track, "Just in Time", was arranged by Farmer.  Golson is featured on "Ruby, My Dear", which is played as a ballad.Moncur does not play on "In Love In Vain", which has "a loose, conversational approach to its statement of the melody", but he composed the final track on the original album, "Sonny's Back", a comment on the return from exile of saxophonist Sonny Rollins. The Jazztet was a jazz sextet, co-founded in 1959 by trumpeter Art Farmer and tenor saxophonist Benny Golson, always featuring the founders along with a trombonist and a piano-bass-drums rhythm section. In its first phase, the Jazztet lasted until 1962, and helped to launch the careers of pianist McCoy Tyner and trombonist Grachan Moncur III. Farmer and Golson revived the group in 1982 and it again toured extensively. Each generation of the group recorded six albums, which were released on a variety of labels. The Jazztet was "famous for nicely structured, precise yet soulful pieces and a swinging style". It benefitted from having a set of strong compositions by Golson, including "I Remember Clifford", "Whisper Not", "Blues March", "Killer Joe" and "Five Spot After Dark". While Golson also provided many of the arrangements, Farmer took the largest share of the soloing responsibilities. The Jazztet had been in existence for two years when they recorded what would be their final LPs, Here and Now and Another Git Together. The personnel, other than the two co-leaders, flugelhornist Art Farmer and tenor-saxophonist Benny Golson, had completely changed since 1960 but the group sound was the same. The 1962 version of the Jazztet included trombonist Grachan Moncur III, pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Herbie Lewis, and drummer Roy McCurdy. It is remarkable to think that this talent-filled group wasn't, for some reason, snapped up to record even more albums together. Highlights of their excellent out-of-print LP include Ray Bryant's "Tonk," "Whisper Not," "Just in Time," and Thelonious Monk's "Ruby My Dear." A classic if short-lived hard bop group. [This is the original issue and does not include bonus tracks.]
