All bowls are marked with the manufacturer’s mark and the distributor’s mark on the underside in the characteristic manner of the firm. The bowls feature a serpentine gilt rim, green banding hosting a gilt stencil of scrollwork designs and garlands with hand painted pink rosettes in groups of three at intervals around the raised band. The center of the bowl is plain white porcelain.Provenance: According to our client, the set of bowls came from the estate of Charles Sanger Mellen (American, 1852-1927), President of the Northern Pacific Railway from 1897-1903 and the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad from 1903-1913. He worked with J. P. Morgan and was known as the “last of the railway czars.”
