The other two allied monarchs - Alexander I of Russia and Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia - are standing next to the Emperor in the left part of the composition; In the sky we see the symbolic figure of the founder of Holy Roman Empire, King Rudolf of Habsburg. The whole composition is typical for works of well-known Viennese, early-19th-century miniaturist Balthasar Wigand. Another typical feature of Wigand's works - a title written in white color on black background - is inscribed along the miniature's lower margin. It reads: "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser!" (English: "God Save Francis the Emperor!"), which is none other than the first verse of the so-called "Kaiserhymne" ("Emperor's Hymn") that was composed as early as 1797 by Joseph Haydn (music) and Lorenz Leopold Haschka (lyrics). The Battle of Leipzig was the largest in Europe prior to World War I. The war's triumphant (for all allies involved) outcome was premonitory of the ultimate fall of Napoleon's France and, consequently, Napoleon's own abdication in the following (1814) year. Balthasar Wigand (also Wigant) was born in Vienna in 1770 (and not in 1771, as suggested by Thieme-Becker) and died in 1846 in Felixdorf by Vienna. From 1787 to 1793 he studied at the Vienna Academy and soon became a very well known artist. He made (in miniature) views of Vienna and other European cities heavily populated by figures of people and horses. He founded his own workshop for cassettes, paperweights, lampshades, etc. decorated with self-produced (or produced by his apprentices, though their works are considerably more naive than those of their master) gouaches and watercolors. Some of theses small paintings were dedicated to the events of the then recent Napoleonic Wars. He painted (gouache, watercolour) mainly old Viennese miniature vedute with well-characterized tiny staffage. Works of Wigand are housed in the Historical Museum of the City of Vienna and in the Liechtenstein Art Gallery.
