Description: Barbie® 1959 35th anniversary reproduction of the original Blonde Barbie® doll with pony tail. Outfitted in original Icebreaker skating #942 outfit. Doll is in mint condition outfit is original in new condition with Black Nylon Pantyhose. I. History: a. American female Ice skaters in the 1960s: The women's single skating competition of the 1960 Winter Olympics was held at the Blyth Arena in Squaw Valley, California. The compulsory figures section took place on Sunday, Feb. 21, 1960, with the free skating section concluding the event two days later. Carol Heiss won gold for the United States, going one better from her silver medal at the 1956 Olympics. Barbra Roles took the Bronze for the USA. She is also the 1962 U.S. national champion and is currently working as a coach.. Then, on Feb. 15, 1961, a tragedy shook the figure skating world when Sabena Flight 548, carrying the 1961 U.S. World Team to the World Figure Skating Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia, crashed in Berg-Kampenhout, about 45 minutes outside of Brussels, Belgium. Peggy Fleming served as a beacon of hope for U.S. Figure Skating in the wake of the 1961 plane crash. Fleming won the first of five consecutive U.S. women's championships in 1964. Her first Olympic appearance at the 1964 Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria, earned her a sixth-place finish. In the North American title competition, she finished second (1965) and then first (1967). After a third-place performance at her first world championship in 1965, she placed first for three consecutive years (1966 through 1968). Seven years after the 1961 tragedy, Fleming won Olympic gold at the 1968 Olympics in Grenoble, France, marking the only gold medal for the United States at the Games. She also held the U.S. title from 1964 to 1968 and the World title from 1966 to 1968. Given the decade, the woman of the era became more active in the sport, given Flemings inspiration. Even 1992 Olympic champion Kristi Yamaguchi was quoted "I'm sure every girl out there wished that she could move like Peggy -- or look like Peggy -- and float like her on the ice..." b. Mattel's Barbie Doll line 1961: The first Vintage Barbie Dolls were released in 1959 by a reluctant Mattel toy Company. The Doll was the brain child of Ruth Handler who always believed the Doll would be a big seller. The story is very interesting several books have be written, an well as several collectors guides. In 1961 two years after the first release the company came up with the career line. Since 1961 the doll has held well over 200 different Jobs. The 1961 #5 is the first Barbie to have a hollow body. Many #5 Vintage Barbie Dolls have a "greasy" looking face due to the type of vinyl used. American Airlines worked closely with Mattel to ensure the dolls uniform fit the company's 1960 uniform and grooming standards handbook for stewardess. The American Airlines uniform was numbered #984 by Mattel and was available until 1964 when it was discontinued. There are very few brands of toys that can claim a run starting in 1959 and continuing until today. This make the Vintage Barbie highly collectible. II.
