Director Hal Ashby had to work hard to convince Stevens to exclusively narrate the film through his whimsical and poignant songs, but Stevens agreed. Original vinyl copies of this soundtrack trade for a bundle (it was pressed in very limited quantities when it finally came out in 2007 on Cameron Crowe's Vinyl Films label). Stevens' raw solo performances of songs from his albums join new ones he wrote for the film: "Don't Be Shy," "Tea for the Tillerman," "Miles from Nowhere," "I Think I See the Light," "On the Road to Find Out," "If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out" and more including previously unheard audio masters and dialogue.
