Description: Huge original antique print from an 1880s illustrated journal. It depicts an opium den in a Chinese city, with men smoking opium in cots. Below the picture is the start of a long 30-inch article on Opium Smoking in China, which is continued on the back side of the print. Opium prohibition in China began in 1729, yet was followed by nearly two centuries of increasing opium use. After 1860, opium use continued to increase with widespread domestic production in China. By 1905 (25 years after this print was made), an estimated 25 percent of the male population were regular consumers of the drug. Recreational use of opium elsewhere in the world remained rare into late in the 19th century, as indicated by ambivalent reports of opium usage. The print is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 11 x 16 inches (28 x 40.5 cm). The picture fills most of the page, with a caption below.The page is in excellent condition for its age.
