Description: Chozo Muto 1933 Siebold Postcard RARE F. M. Trautz This New Year's postcard, postmarked from Nara on January 3, 1933, was sent by Chozo Muto (1881–1942), pioneering economist, educator, and collector to F. M. Trautz , a Japanologist. The Muto Bunko (Muto Chozo Library) at Nagasaki University Library Economics Branch houses a collection of approximately 10,000 Japanese and Western books, along with around 200 materials such as maps, paintings, calligraphy, and ceramics. The reverse side is of interest, as there is a an image from the Siebold's book, Nippon. Archiv zur Beschreibung von Japan, of a group of Japanese celebrating the New Years. This book by Philipp Franz von Siebold is a monumental work that stands as a testament to the depth of his research. Siebold, a German physician and naturalist, spent several years in Japan during the early 19th century, where he amassed a vast collection of botanical, zoological, and ethnographic materials. Friedrich Max Trautz (1877-1952) was a German Army officer, scholar and Japanologist. He developed a deep interest in Japan and studied Japanese in Berlin, earning the first doctorate in Japanese studies from Friedrich Wilhelm University. He worked at the Ethnological Museum in Berlin and was instrumental in promoting the academic study of Japanese history and culture. In 1926, he became the German director of the Japan Institute in Berlin. He continued his research in Kyoto and became the first director of the German Research Institute in Japan in 1934. His work included documenting traditional Japanese culture and fostering German-Japanese cultural exchanges.
