Côtes-du-Nord was one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4,1790. It was created from part of the former province of Brittany. Its name was changed in 1990 to Côtes-d'Armor (ar mor meaning by the sea in Breton). The name also has a historical connotation recalling the Roman province of Armorica. France is split into 22 regions; Alsace, Aquitaine, Auvergne, Basse-Normandie, Bourgogne, Bretagne, Centre, Champagne-Ardenne, Corse, Franche-Comte, Haute-Normandie, Ile-de-France, Languedoc-Roussillon, Limousin, Lorraine, Midi-Pyrenees, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Pays de la Loire, Picardie, Poitou-Charentes, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, Rhone-Alpes (this includes the Island of Corsica). Plus the overseas departments (French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Reunion) and the overseas territorial collectivities (Mayotte, Saint Pierre and Miquelon) Plus the dependant areas of Bassas da India, Clipperton Island, Europa Island, French Polynesia, French Southern and Antarctic Lands, Glorioso Islands, Juan de Nova Island, New Caledonia, Tromelin Island, Wallis and Futuna note: the US does not recognize claims to Antarctica. Regions are then divided into departments (counties). There is a total of 96 excluding the overseas territories. After the French Revolution, the country was originally divided in to 82 departements, as the population has grown and for administrative reasons certain departments have been divided creating more.
