NUMBER OF PHOTOS: 1 COMMENTS / CONDITION: Offered is an approximately 3-1/2"x5-1/2" real photo postcard of Crash Davis, pictured in his Philadelphia Athletics uniform circa 1940-42. The original photo was taken by George Burke in 1940-42, but this card was produced some time later (no earlier than the 1950's judging by the standard Kodak back). Comes from a large collection of such postcards that we will be listing over the coming months, all having standard postcard backs but being postally unused. Wear on these, if any, is mostly confined to minor corner and edge wear, but see scans for further details including condition. BIO: Lawrence Columbus Davis was born in Canon, GA and died in 2001 in Greensboro, NC. He went to college at Duke University. He played major league baseball from 1940 to 1942 as infielder for the Philadelphia Athletics. Davis earned the nickname "Crash" at age 14 when he collided with a teammate when chasing down a fly ball. His name inspired that of the main character of the 1988 movie Bull Durham. He was drafted into the United States Navy in 1942 amid World War II, and was assigned to Harvard University where he helped run the ROTC program. Davis also coached Harvard's baseball and squash teams. When he was discharged from the Navy in 1946, Davis returned to Durham to begin graduate school at Duke and play for the Durham Bulls, then a part of the Carolina League. Davis would play in the minor leagues, with teams including the Reidsville Luckies and the Raleigh Capitals, until 1952. After Bull Durham was released, Davis became a minor celebrity. He befriended the director of the film, Ron Shelton, and Shelton gave him a bit part in his movie Cobb about controversial baseball player Ty Cobb.
