For your consideration is an exceedingly rare and historically important original antique c.1879 hand-blown Prussian / German crystal royal presentation goblet, featuring the masterfully hand-engraved royal coat of arms of H.R.H Crown Prince Frederick Wilhelm (future Emperor of Germany as Frederick III) and the inscription: "Prince Frederick Wilhelm drank from this glass at the Berlin Industrial Exposition 27 June 1879." This absolutely massive royal presentation goblet also includes the original goblet lid, in fine silver plate, by silversmith JORTZIN. Hallmarked RK JORTZIN 8.Silver plate lid is cooper wheel engraved, with black bear applique affixed to top of lid. Bear is holding a shield engraved with the inscription: BERLINER GEWERBE AUSSTELLUNG 1879 (Berlin Commercial Exposition). Weight of lid: 175 grams. Lid diameter: 6.0". Lid is engraved: DEM VEREHRTEN HERRN FRITZ KUHNEMANN - ALBERT BLUTH. Total weight of goblet including lid: 1725 grams. Height: 12.5". Diameter of rim: 6.5". Diameter of base: 5.0". The royal presentation goblet is beautifully scalloped around the perimeter of the goblet. Base is ground and beveled at center. Royal goblet is completely hand-blown and cooper wheel engraved. Frederick III (Friedrich Wilhelm Nikolaus Karl; 18 October 1831 15 June 1888) was German Emperor and King of Prussia for 99 days between March and June 1888, during the Year of the Three Emperors. Known informally as "Fritz", he was the only son of Emperor Wilhelm I and was raised in his family's tradition of military service. Following the unification of Germany in 1871, his father, then King of Prussia, became German Emperor. Upon Wilhelm's death at the age of ninety on 9 March 1888, the thrones passed to Frederick, who had been German Crown Prince for seventeen years and Crown Prince of Prussia for twenty-seven years. Frederick was suffering from cancer of the larynx when he died, aged fifty-six, following unsuccessful medical treatments for his condition. The first Berlin Industrial Exposition was initiated by the Prussian Minister Christian Peter Wilhelm Beuth. The trade fair took place from 1 September to 15 October 1822 as an exhibition of regional trades in the House of Industries in the Klosterstrae. There were 182 exhibition companies showing 998 different products to 9514 visitors. The second trade fair took place in 1827 at the same place. In 1844, the General German Industrial Exhibition (in German Allgemeine Deutsche Gewerbe-Ausstellung) took place in the old arsenal house, the Zeughaus of Berlin. Among 3040 exhibition companies, there were 685 Berlin companies showing a large variety of German industrial goods - the exhibition saw 260,000 visitors. Berlin Industrial Exposition 1879: In 1879, a large exhibition was set in an exhibition park created near the Lehrte Station. The exhibition was not only a show of technological advancements, but it was also created as an amusement park. One of the main attractions of the event was the first electric locomotive from Siemens & Halske. Originally built for use in a coal mine, it pulled three small cars fitted with wooden benches, each car being capable of carrying six passengers for a ride along a 300-meter circular track. Electrical power was supplied to a third rail from a nearby generating station. During the four months of the exhibition, it carried 90,000 passengers. The original locomotive is now displayed at the Deutsches Museum in Munich, and a replica is shown at the German Museum of Technology (Berlin).
