Description: Donald J. Sobol began publishing a newspaper column called Two Minute Mysteries in 1958. Each column featured a couple of short crime stories with clues (usually in the form of logical contradictions) built into the narrative. At the end of each story, the detective would declare that he'd solved the case, and then the reader was challenged to explain the conclusion and how it was arrived at. Two Minute Mysteries was popular as a brain teaser. In 1963, after publishing several Two Minute Mysteries collections, Sobol reworked the formula as a "kid detective" series, and Leroy "Encyclopedia" Brown was born. The Encyclopedia Brown mysteries take two basic forms: in one, Encyclopedia runs a neighborhood detective agency, solving cases brought to him by other kids for 25 cents. These stories typically pitted Encyclopedia (and his partner, Sally Kimball, the "muscle" of the organization) against Bugs Meany, local bully and leader of the Tigers, a gang of toughs. In the second class of stories, Encyclopedia helps his father, Chief Brown of the Idaville police, solve tough cases over dinner. Chief Brown explains the difficult case and by the time dessert is finished Encyclopedia will have reached the solution. For both types of tales, readers were invited to puzzle out the solution and could find it explained toward the back of the book. For sale as pictured: a collection of Encyclopedia Brown books in various editions.
