Description: GERMAN WESTERWALD STONEWARE | Antique Pieta (18th/19th century) Up for sale is this rare antique colonial German statuette of Mary and Jesus in German stoneware with cobalt blue glaze. 18th or 19th century. The letters H.M.B.F.UNS stand for the German phrase “Heilige Maria bete fuer uns” which means “Holy Mary pray for us” in English: inside is the inscription “Plein” - the name of an ancient pottery family who lived in the village of Speicher in the Eifel region not too far from the Westerwald. This piece was most likely created there. Pietà (Italian for “piety, compassion”, after the Latin domina nostra de pietate “our Lady of Pity”), also known as the Vespers picture or the Lamentation of Mary, is a depiction of Mary as the Mater Dolorosa (Mother of Sorrows) with the body of Jesus Christ, who has been taken down from the cross. In contrast to the Lamentation of Christ, the body of Jesus always lies in Mary's womb.
