Malipiero’s opera is based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s novella Prinzessin Brambilla, subtitled A Caprice After Jacques Callot, and the Balli are integral to both. Karl-Heinz Werner’s German translation of the libretto draws on both Prinzessin Bambilla itself and the singing translation used for the opera's German première during the 1951 Berliner Festwochen, with material added by Barbara Cappel.
