Hurst was a 25-year old native of Chambers Country, Alabama, when the Civil War began. In April 1861, he crossed over the Chattahoochee Rive to Camp Jackson at West Point, George and enlisted as a musician in Company D, 4th Regiment Georgia Infantry Volunteers. Seven months later, at his request, the Confederate States War Department granted his transfer to Company C, 14th Regiment Alabama Volunteers. The 14th Regiment was mustered into Confederate service in Montgomery in July 1861. Hurst joined it soon after it began its service. In March 1862, it became a part of Brigadier General Roger Pryor’s Brigade, which included the 3rd Virginia Infantry and the 2nd and 8th Florida Regiments. The brigade was part of Major General Richard H. Anderson’s division, which eventually was assigned to General Longstreet’s Corps in the Army of Northern Virginia. After the siege of Yorktown in 1862, the 14th Regiment was returned to Richmond. It saw action at the Battle of Seven Pines (Fair Oaks), Gaines Mille and at Frazier’s Farm and suffered heavy casualties. Hurst was wounded in the Battle of Gaines’ Mill on June 27, 1862. The unit fought at the Battle of Second Manassas, Harper’s Ferry, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. In September 1862, the 14th was transferred from Pryor’s command to Brigadier General Cadmus M. Wilcox’s brigade, which also included the 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th Alabama Infantry Regiments, Anderson’s Division of Longstreet’s Corps. The 14th remained in the brigade fighting at Chancellorsville, Salem Church, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, Cold Harbor, during the Siege of Petersburg and elsewhere until the end of the Civil War. Hurst remained with the 14th Regiment throughout the war, finally surrendering at Appomattox. This is a brand new, unread, pristine condition booklet. It has no shortcomings. This booklet is in excellent condition. It is clean and tight. It has no writing, smudging or foxing and the pages are in great condition. Both the interior and the exterior wrap are in fine condition. HISTORY OF THE FOURTEENTH REGIMENT ALABAMA VOLUNTEERS WITH A LIST OF THE NAMES OF EVERY MAN THAT EVER BELONGED TO THE REGIMENT BY M. B.
