Description: Vintage round-cornered, standard-sized chrome postcard with a view ofthe Lochsa River in western Idaho, near the Powell Ranger Station. The area was the siteof a camp for the Lewis and Clark Expedition (Corps of Discovery) in 1805. Back caption reads, "LOCHSA RIVER, AT POWELL RANGER STATION.These dauntless exploreres reported on Sept. 14th, 1805: ' --- & Encampedopposit a Small Island at the mouth of a branch on the right side of the riverwhich is at this place 80 yards wide. Swift and Stoney, here we were compelledto kill a colt for our men & selves to eat for want of meat & we named the South forkColt killed Creek - (now White Sand Creek).' The photographer checked L&Caccuracy and found river 78 yds. wide at upstream end of island."
