Clive Barker is an outstanding storyteller - J G Ballard Promotional A spellbinding epic fantasy novel Kirkus US Review Dazzling metaphysical epic-adventure as Barker surpasses his previous ground-breaking work (The Great and Secret Show, 1989, etc.) to reconfigure the Fall and to imagine a modern-day attempt to reverse it. A complex cosmology underpins the vigorous, at times horrific, action here: "Imajica" is the known universe of live "Dominions," or parallel worlds, four "reconciled" but the fifth, Earth, "unreconciled" - unaware of the other four, of the tyrannical "Autarch" who rules them, and of the "God Hapeximendios," who oversees all five (and who wrested "His" power from the "Goddesses" of old). Periodically, Hapeximendios has sent His "sons" - including Christ - to attempt to unite, by magical rites, the Fifth Dominion to the others. The last attempted "Reconciliation" ended in catastrophe - an invasion of Earth by hellish powers - and today magic has been nearly eradicated from Earth by a "Society" that alone knows of the Imajica and of the catastrophe. The densely woven story here opens with a jealous man venturing into Londons dankest slum to hire an assassin to kill his estranged wife, Judith; the assassin turns out to be a "mystif," a fabulous creature from the Second Dominion, capable of appearing as the erotic ideal of any who behold it. As the mystif hunts Judith, it in turn is hunted by Judiths former lover, "Gentle," who in time learns that he is the new "Reconciler" - and the mystif his long-forgotten servant. Undertaking dangerous, splendor-filled journeys through the other Dominions, Gentle and the mystif fall in love, marry, and encounter numerous fantastic creatures and, finally, death; later, Gentle helps dethrone the Autarch, learns the chilling secret of his and Judiths origin, helps free the Goddesses and slay God, and, back on Earth, inspires the destruction of the Society and undertakes Reconciliation - with hell-borne, then heaven-sent, results. An astonishing feat of the imagination, immensely engrossing despite its demanding - at times indulgent - length, running riot with ideas, fantastical inventions, graphic sex and violence, soul-terrors, and emotional and intellectual resonances. Barkers best yet. (Kirkus Reviews) The Nile Staff Review Barker has a frighteningly vivid imagination, and it has exploded all over the pages of this book.Sure, its long (originally released in two parts) and it does drag occasionally, most notably towards the end, but if youre still there after 800 pages you can hang in there for the last hundred.I have never been a fan of horror, so I hadnt heard of Barker when I was given a secondhand copy by relatives whod acquired it during their travels. I didnt know quite what to expect but after a lengthy introduction to the characters, the book moves beyond our world and into the other Dominions that make up the Imajica, at which point it becomes brilliant fantasy.John Furie Zacharias, or Gentle to his friends, a failed artist with a string of broken hearts behind him stretching into a past he cant remember. Judith, the one woman he cant get over, who married someone else after their break-up. Pieohpah, shapeshifting assassin, linked to them both by a forgotten past, but hired by Judiths husband to kill her because he cant live without her, and fears she will leave him. The husband confesses to Gentle and asks him to stop the assassin, and so begins a story that will take Gentle and Pie from the Fifth Dominion (Earth) into the Fourth, across the Third and Second, to the edge of the First Dominion, home of Hapexamendios the Unbeheld, God of the Imajica. There is so much detail in the story despite the massive scale of the work, and the people who fill these other worlds are well thought out. There are crimes, and there is tragedy, and revenge, and hope. When I finished reading the book the first time in my late teens, it left a lasting impression, gave me a taste for the epic, and Ive read it twice more since (after tracking down another copy) because it is just that good.Barker is not for everyone, and this is not a quick read by any means. It can be tough going, but it is well worth the effort.Matthew@ The NileRead the rest of Matthew s reviews here. Long Description A book of revelations.
