Description: Lewes is an incorporated city on the Delaware Bay in eastern Sussex County, Delaware. Along with neighboring Rehoboth Beach, Lewes is one of the principal cities of Delaware’s rapidly growing Cape Region. It was the site of the first European settlement in Delaware, a whaling and trading post those Dutch settlers founded in 1631, and named Zwaanendael, (Swan Valley). The colony had a short existence, as a local tribe of “Lenape Native Americans” murdered all the 32 settlers in 1632. The Dutch returned and a settlement was established in 1863, and lasted to the next year when in 1864 , when the English captured New Netherland from the Dutch. The colonists were slow to regroup but in 1680 the Duke of York, the village was reorganized and known for two years as “New Deale”. A log courthouse was built, an Anglican congregation was established by 1681 and a Presbyterian church was built in 1682. Lewes was incorporated by the Delaware State Assembly in 1818. This card, published by the “Mayrose Co., New York.” chronicles a “Dutch Building in Lewes Del.” The building based on the “Statenlogement” building in Hoorn, the Netherlands was built and used as a women’s club starting in 1930. It is now the Zwaanendael Museum. It is postmarked 1949 and is in good condition with minor wear and a clean, clear image. The reverse has a short note and is clean.
