Description: Forestry Schools in Upper Michigan, Then and Now... by Louis J. Verme. Unknown printing (likely the only printing). Munising, Michigan: Avanti Publishing 1999. Volume is in Very Good Plus Condition. The hinges and binding are very tight, and the pages are very clean and crisp. Illustrated with photographs. In the spring of 1777 a merchant of Nantes asked Benjamin Franklin, ouragent in France, to write a letter of recommendation for a M. Tardiveau whowished to establish himself in Philadelphia. In the summer of the same year thisFrenchman was on his way to Philadelphia where almost immediately hebecame a teacher of French. Soon, however, he sensed a future in the trans-Allegheny section, and in 1781 he was supplying flour to the Virginia regimentsunder George Rogers Clark in Kentucky. He settled in the region of Louis-ville and in 1787 was appointed agent of the French colonists in the "westernterritory" where he defended their interests before Congress. Apparently hecame to Philadelphia from time to time on business and was well acquaintedwith some of the leading merchants. He became a friend of St. John de Creve-coeur, and letters from Tardiveau to de Crevecoeur are included in this volume. His dream of opening new channels of trade with the Spanish settlements didnot come true. Nevertheless, he was one of the early pioneers of the West. Thisattractive book contains various hitherto unpublished documents, and offersinformation about a character for the most part unknown.Media Mail shipping included in the U.S.A.
