Description: Marian Anderson - Civil Rights icon, legendary singer. A wonderfully ironic signed cachet cover for the 1976 Bicentennial. It is boldly signed across the blank cover which was not addressed, stamped or obviously postmarked. She rose to fame as a Civil Rights figure when she was blocked by the Daughters of the American Revolution from performing at Constitution Hall. Professionally stunted in America during the pre-war period, Anderson made an international name for herself performing throughout Europe in the mid 1930’s. Recognized as one of the world’s greatest singers she returned to perform in the United States in the late 1930’s. It was during this tour period that her most memorable concert occurred which helped make her a Civil Rights icon. As part of the tour she was to sing at Constitution Hall. The DAR owned the hall and blocked her from performing because of her race. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt resigned her membership in the DAR as a protest and then helped arrange an alternative concert at the Lincoln Memorial on Easter 1939. The concert was attended by tens of thousands and listened to by millions and instantly changed her to a historic political figure. This item is offered by Custodians of History, Inc.
