Description: OLD TIMES ON THE MISSISSIPPI Written by Mark Twain and published by Belford Brothers Publishers, Toronto; printed in 1876. This is the first edition and book appearance of Twain’s fascinating remembrance of his pre-Civil War Mississippi riverboat days as a boy and young man. This work was first published in The Atlantic Monthly, from January – August of 1875. This Canadian printing was basically pirated from the magazine along with the essay “A Literary Nightmare”—a common practice among foreign publishers of the time. The first authorized publication in book form was included as part of Life on the Mississippi in 1883. BAL 3368—Includes an advertisement for Tom Sawyer opposite the title page, title set in three lines and imprint in roman numerals on the title page and ads for “New and Popular Books” on the last page. The book also includes a short essay, “A Literary Nightmare”, after the memoir section.
