Description: Broadway was originally the Wickquasgeck Trail, carved into the brush of Manhattan by its Native American inhabitants. Wickquasgeck means "birch-bark country" in the Algonquian language. This trail originally snaked through swamps and rocks along the length of Manhattan Island and upon the arrival of the Dutch, the trail soon became the main road through the island from Nieuw Amsterdam at the southern tip. The Dutch explorer and entrepreneur David Pietersz. de Vries gives the first mention of it in his journal for the year 1642 ("the Wickquasgeck Road over which the Indians passed daily"). The Dutch named the road "Breede We Because Broadway preceded the grid that the Commissioners' Plan of 1811 imposed on the island, Broadway crosses midtown Manhattan diagonally, intersecting with both the east-west streets and north-south avenues. Broadway's intersections with avenues, marked by "squares" (some merely triangular slivers of open space), have induced some interesting architecture, such as the Flatiron Building. Herald Square is formed by the intersection of Broadway, Sixth Avenue (officially named Avenue of the Americas), and 34th Street in Manhattan. Named for the New York Herald, a now-defunct newspaper formerly headquartered there, it also gives its name to the surrounding area. The intersection is a typical Manhattan bow-tie square that consists of two named sections, Herald Square to the north (uptown) and Greeley Square to the south (downtown). This card captures Broadway at Night looking Uptown from Herald Square. The square is bustling with pedestrian traffic, street cars and early autos. Atop the Hotel Normandie is a huge billboard, (I think added) for “Washburn-Crosby Gold Medal Flour”. Washburn-Crosby stated as ‘Minneapolis Milling Company” incorporated in 1856, then was soon acquired by C. Washburn who then entered into a partnership with John Crosby to form “Washburn-Crosby” which in 1928 merged with 28 other mills to became "General Mills". It is in good condition with some wear on the corners and edges. There is a bend upper right corner and upper left. The image is clean and clear with good colors as is the reverse.
