New York City in May, 1963, Birdland Jazz Club, Art Gallery PS 52-4

Description: Thirty five original negatives with original proof sheet taken by a professional photographer, my father, James V. Culberson, in early May of 1963. These negatives show renowned Houston artist, Charles Schorre, conversing with some gentlemen in a small art gallery, apparently preparing for the opening of an art exhibit (photos of it are in eBay item #266934381545) in a small gallery. There are ten photos taken inside the famous Birdland Jazz Club of two different bands performing.These photo negatives that my dad took are a remarkable look back in time. Sharp, with great contrast and exposure, they will still enlarge well. They have been well cared for in the intervening years. As his heir I am the copyright holder and will convey copyright if requested. With this sale I am including a CD upon which I burned full frame images from each negative. I used a Nikon Super Cool Scan 5000 ED to digitize all the photo negatives. I scanned all of the negatives at 400 pixels per inch, 4,000 pixels on the longest axis. They are all full frame scans done in gray scale since the negatives are Kodak Tri-X film which was B&W. I burned them to a CD which is included with this lot. Charles Schorre and my dad were close friends. The Schorre family and mine were close friends. Schorre and my dad were in NY apparently for this art opening (maybe some of Schorre's work on the walls, I'm not sure) and for the 8th annual New York Art Director's Club Conference. A proof sheet of that and scenes of New York will be on eBay soon. My dad and Schorre were fans of jazz so they made it to Birdland where papa took some photos which are in this lot. I wish I could ask him for details on their trip the NY, but he's been dead since 1997. Charles Schorre died in 1996.
