Named one of the 'Five Good Emperors' by Niccolò Machiavelli, Hadrian's interest in Hellenic culture was nurtured during his time in Athens. As emperor, he sponsored public works in Athens and granted Greeks equal representation in Rome, while his portraits reflected his admiration for Greek aesthetics.
