Description: Appraised by reputable appraiser. Authentic handmade rug produced in Baotou/Paotou, a town in Inner Mongolia in China, northeast of Ningxia. 2’3” X 4’6” The ground color of this rug is deep dark blue with accent colors that include tan, green, apricot, blue, ivory and orange. The rug is made of wool knotted to a cotton foundation. The material, workmanship, colors and designs are consistent with rugs produced during the first quarter of the 20th century. The design is a pictorial scene of a pair of mandarin ducks gliding and swimming over a lotus pond. In traditional Chinese culture, mandarin ducks are believed to be lifelong couples, unlike other species of ducks. ... A Chinese proverb for loving couples uses the mandarin duck as a metaphor. The pictorial scene is surrounded by a border decorated with clusters of peonies connected by angular vines. The fabric possesses approximately 70 knots per square inch, consistent with good examples of the genre. In excellent condition, with soft, thick pile. Some wear thru on edges (shown in pic) and one corner. This is a good example of the genre. The pictorial design is meticulously drawn and executed without clutter. The sentimental metaphor associated with the design is a positive attribute. The back of the rug has been protected by the application of a cotton cloth backing stitched to the back edges of the fabric. This backing may indicate use as a chair cushion. The backing and its application are consistent with proper conservation practices, no glues or fixatives were used.
