The color may vary under indoor lighting or bright sunlight.Handsome, end tables made by, "Thomasville," circa 1966. They are made of solid poplar wood and are veneered with 1/16" thick walnut veneers. Unlike the paper thin veneers or wood-like stickers used by IKEA and other contemporary furniture makers, these veneers are thick and could be sanded and refinished. Aside from the beautiful, quad-matched veneer on the tops, the veneer along the sides of the pieces are quite lovely and have a nice, varied wood grain--another sign that that they are real wood and not wood grain generated by a computer and printed onto a sticker. Each table sits on 4 elegant, cabriole legs. The drawer face has a border of lighter-stained veneer and a metal, drop pull in the center. The drawer itself is held together with dovetail joints. The tables are strong, solid, and sturdy, but have some cosmetic blemishes. Aside from the typical nicks and scratches that you expect to find on old used furniture, there are some chips in the veneer under the drawer of one of the tables (see close up photo). These chips could be touched-up and concealed using a stain pen. Both tables have some worn stain and finish thanks to someone not using a coaster or placing a vase without a dish under it. Fortunately, the water damage is superficial--the wood is not raised or swollen. The previous owner tried touching up these worn spots using stain, but it was a darker color than what the manufacturer used. It actually looks good on the table that has the chips under the drawer but it doesn't look good on the other--makes the spots look darker and more obvious. If you are going to put a vase, lamp, doily, or anything else on top, that should cover these spots. Otherwise, the only solution will be to refinish the tops. Our carpenter thoroughly inspected the tables and found the front legs of one of the tables were a bit wobbly. He reinforced them so that they are tight and no longer wobble. Now, the legs and top are tight and sturdy, and the drawers slide in and out with ease. They are ready for another lifetime of service!
