Description: We gave two measurments one for Shadow Box and one for the Painting inside Box..Purvis Young 1943-2010With a unique sense of urgency, Purvis Young created brushy, dreamlike paintings that focus on the lives and histories of Black Americans. The late, self-taught artist filtered these motifs through the lens of folklore, religion, and art history—Young was inspired by Old Masters such as El Greco, and by Vincent van Gogh, whose work he studied in books from the public library. He painted on whatever surfaces he could find: His “canvases” included scraps of lumber, plywood, and other trash that he scavenged from the streets of his Miami neighborhood. He presented his paintings along the boarded up storefronts that lined a deserted alley where he lived. Young’s indefatigable practice has won him myriad fans across the art world. His work now belongs in the collections of the American Folk Art Museum, the Rubell Family Collection, The Bass in Miami, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., among many others. He applied his personal world view to the medium of paint to create a visual language that expressed his concerns as much as it captured the life of the people and city that surrounded him. After learning of the "Freedom Walls" created by artists in Detroit and Chicago, Young decided in 1972, to create his own public mural at the intersection of Northwest Third Avenue and 14th Street in Overtown, Miami's inner-city coined "Good Bread Alley." The installation was visible from the newly constructed Interstate 95, which had all but dissected and consequently isolated his community from the rest of South Florida. My husband was a serious collector of folk art, he had this piece framed in a shadow box as it was his favorite. We are selling due to age and downsizing. Beautiful Piece of Purvis Young Art.
