Description: Queen Elizabeth 2’s Final American Departure: New York Harbor, October 16, 2008 ------------------------------------------------ The Queen Elizabeth 2, commonly called the QE2, is a retired ocean liner which served from 1969 until 2008 as a transatlantic liner and cruise ship. She cruised from her home port of Southhampton, UK to New York, New York, USA as the flagship of the Cunard Line. She was designed in Liverpool and Southhampton, England and built in Clydesbank, Scotland. In the mid 1980s, she was refitted with a modern diesel powerplant. After almost forty years, and beginning her 806th transatlantic crossing, she left New York Harbor for the last time in October of 2008. She saluted the Statue of Liberty a final time and then enjoyed a ceremonial rendezvous around the harbor. She was escorted by spraying fireboats, including the icon boat Fire Fighter, and by many pleasure boats whose sailors did not want to miss the Queen Elizabeth 2’s momentous final departure from America. In 2008, she was purchased by Dubai World, and after being laid up for a few years at the Dubai Drydocks, she was extensively refurbished at a cost of many millions of dollars. In 2018, the Queen Elizabeth 2 was successfully metamorphosed into a grand, five star floating hotel with 447 rooms and suites, three restaurants, a gym, an indoor pool, a theater, and a museum. She is anchored on a man-made cruise terminal in Dubai called Port Rashid which is two minutes from the beach and from Dubai Downtown. Many of his family members were self taught artists, woodcarvers, automobile mechanics and veterans of foreign wars including his father a WW1 US Army veteran. Bill is a graduate of Medfield High School, Wentworth Institute, and Northeastern University. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military and aerospace companies in industrial engineering and IR optics. His painting incorporates “old skool” mechanical and civil drafting tools and he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics and inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings. Look for them. He is frequently commissioned by United States Naval officers to create paintings of their ships and aircraft carriers on nautical charts. In May, 2018, and for one year, four of Bill’s automotive related paintings were on display at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA
