Description: RARE Antique I. A. Sheppard & Co. Baltimore #7 Cast Iron Kettle w/Lid, Post-1866. Condition: Fine condition, 8.5 / 10. No damage. No cracks. Sits flat. This kettle was cleaned and seasoned twice. This is the first #7 I have seen from this manufacturer, and it is in excellent condition. Great for a collector. Data is hard to find on this firm, but I believe that they made cast iron cookware when they opened their Baltimore factory in 1866, until it closed in 1930. The early pieces have fine gate marks. This kettle has a very thin gate mark 5.5 inches long. Kettle is 7 inches high, and 6 inches diameter at base. Weight is 8 pounds. Dating: The bottom of this kettle has a very fine thin gate mark 5.5 inches long. This may date the kettle to the 1860s, based upon an advertising record in which I. A. Sheppard offers cast iron hollow-ware in 1867. The company opened its Baltimore plant in 1866, and this location appears on the kettle lid. Therefore we date this kettle as post-1866. This kettle was made by Isaac A. Sheppard & Co. -- Philadelphia Stove-makers. They had factories in both Philadelphia and Baltimore. Isaac A. Sheppard & Co. was the last of the big Philadelphia stove foundries to be established, in 1860, and one of the most successful, its growing business requiring the opening in 1866 of a smaller branch plant in Baltimore to meet the anticipated demands of the postwar market in the ex-Confederacy, and the building of an entirely new Philadelphia plant on a larger site in 1872-3.
