Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Offering a one-page 4 7/8 x 6 1/5, n.d., n.p., autograph quote signed by WENDELL PHILIPS (1811-1894) referencing JOHN BROWN (1800--1859). “Count that day lost whose low descending sun sees at thy hand No worthy action done. These old lines John Brown of Harper’s Ferry, taught to each of his children. Wendell Phillips” Comes with a handsome engraving of Phillips featuring his facsimile signature. The quote perfectly aligns with how sympathetic contemporaries viewed Brown – as a zealous man of action. It is no surprise that these same words inspired Brown’s fellow abolitionist, Wendell Phillips, who held up Brown as a martyr of the abolitionist cause. Even though Brown did not succeed in his attempt to capture the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (today West Virginia) in mid-October 1859, he tried to complete in his mind, “a worthy action.” These lines were evidently persuasive to Brown’s children as well, three of whom (Watson, Oliver and Owen) joined their father at Harpers Ferry. After Brown’s death, Phillips lobbied unsuccessfully to have Brown buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA, in the hope it would galvanize abolitionists there. JOHN BROWN planned and led a raid with some of his supporters on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, seeking to start an insurrection against slavery. Had it been successful, Brown’s plan was to use the weapons seized during the raid to arm a rebellion against the United States. Brown’s raid failed and he was hanged. Many, including Phillips, mourned the death of Brown. WENDELL Phillips, an attorney, witnessed from his office on Court Street in Boston as a mob searched for abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison. The mob was angered by Garrison’s abolitionist newspaper, The Liberator, and by the abolition meeting scheduled for later in the day at the headquarters of the Female Anti-Slavery Society on Washington Street. Many cite this day as the spark for Phillips’ abolitionist work. Soon after this event, Phillips gave up his law practice and devoted himself to the abolitionist cause. Toning, folds. Else excellent and a great example of abolitionist history. Everything we sell is guaranteed authentic forever to the original buyer. We also offer a 30-day return policy.
