Description: Paris of To-Day by Richard Kaufmann. Translated from the Danish by Olga Flinch. 1st edition of this translation. Published in 1891 by Cassell Publishing Co., New York. Illustrated with more than 150 drawings. 298 pages. This volume provides the reader with a comprehensive look at Paris and Parisian life circa 1891. Special attention is paid to the 1889 Exposition Universelle, which commemorated the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution and brought to the world the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower, a symbol of French engineering and modern advancement, was then NEW -- only two years old! The top edge is gilt. The book is printed on heavy, durable, glossy paper. It measures around 6 3/4" x 9 7/8". The volume is illustrated with numerous drawings by different artists -- there are too many to count, but based on the 5 1/2 page list of illustrations, we estimate that there are well more than 150. The top of the spine is worn and there is ding to the top edge of the back cover. Inside the front cover is a bookplate for Rev. Frank Borton. On the front free endpaper, a prior owner (Borton?) pasted an illustration cut from a magazine and attributed to this book. The text is clean, with no pen or pencil notations. Found in the volume, and provided for the reader, is a flyer advertising The Real Latin Quarter of Paris by F. Berkeley Smith. The original owner of this volume, Francis "Frank" Borton, was a Methodist minister and bookdealer who resided in Pueblo, Mexico. In 1909, he authored a book on "Mexico, Our Next-Door Neighbor." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
