Description: Richard Stine is an artist and writer who is known world-wide through his wickedly funny paintings, drawings, and postcards. He has also published two books, Off To Sea (1987) and The World of Richard Stine (1994) which feature his unique approach to art. Stine came to wide attention as an illustrator for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner and San Francisco Chronicle. His limited edition lithographs are easy to find for sale but just try to find any of his original artwork and you’ll get frustrated. Stine has long sold his own work out of his studios and at art fairs where this drawing was most likely bought. He was living in Ojai, California when this was drawn then moved near Seattle before winding up in New Zealand. This original pen & ink drawing shows Stine’s sense of whimsy. It is signed ‘Stine’ and dated 1982 in pencil with a copyright symbol embossed near the date. The drawing itself is 8.5 x 11 inches and has been matted to 11 x 14 inches. Unfortunately, the matboard used back in 1982 was not acid free and after 40 years the paper has suffered from tanning lines (see photo). The lines don’t travel into the image and could easily be hidden by re-matting this rare piece.
